Australia's winemaking and brewing capabilities have grown enormously in the last twenty years and we now produce world-class beverages for the local and export markets. Although the basic process has been known for thousands of years, the making of quality wine and beer today is complex, with scientific knowledge playing an increasingly important role.

You could start off working for a larger winery to build up your skills in growing grapes, fermenting, bottling, warehousing, packaging and distribution. You could work up to becoming a winemaker, who coordinates the production of wine or spirits from selected varieties of grapes.

At a busy brewery, you will learn to grind grain and mix raw materials and to operate cereal cookers and fermenting vats. You'll also learn about the different raw materials and recipes that turn grain into ales, lagers, stouts and beers. Who knows, with enough experience and dedication, you may end up running your own boutique business one day and exporting your wines to the world.
