Restaurants, cafes, food producers and supermarkets need a reliable supply of seafood and seafood products, like fresh oysters, tinned tuna or frozen fish.

Working in Seafood, you can learn to inspect and sort a fresh catch for size and quality, clean and fillet fish, remove meat from shellfish, process oysters and pack it all before freezing or canning. You may also learn to smoke and marinate seafood and to prepare sashimi-grade fish such as tuna, squid and salmon.

Seafood may be processed on land in specialised facilities or as part of an aquaculture business farming tuna, salmon, oysters, prawns or many other varieties of marine animals. Some seafood is processed at sea on board fishing vessels; you might find yourself working in the Gulf of Carpentaria or in the Southern Ocean!

A job in seafood processing can take you almost anywhere - you could branch out into aquaculture, working on a fishing vessel, marketing seafood in Australia or even head off overseas.
